What is Ayurveda?

Updated: Aug 25

Ayurveda, in essence, is living in tune with nature.  Looking at your body as a part of nature rather than living in nature.

I AM nature and I am AFFECTED by nature. Once we can understand this we can started feeling and understanding our mind and body a little bit better.

Ayurveda is Based on the Five Elements

Everything in nature is made up of elements.  In Ayurveda we define them as Earth, Fire, Water, Air & Space.  Every season, food, activity, organ, herb and spice has a unique combination of these elements.  Every person has specific amounts of each element; this is your dosha. Once we know our dosha we can learn how to stay in balance better.

Every person has a unique Dosha

There are 3 doshas; Pitta, Vata and Kapha.  (Most people are a combination of 2 of these)

Pitta is predominately Fire & Water

Vata is predominately Air & Space

Kapha is predominately Earth & Water

Knowing the quality of Fire (hot, quick, bright) we can understand that cardio, summer, anger and chilies might all be associated with this element.  Same for Air (light, moving, clear) is associated with creative activities, autumn, raw foods, and an irregular schedule. Lastly Earth (solid, still, sticky) can be associated with sleep, potatoes, weight bearing exercise and compassion.

This is just a quick example to help you start thinking in an ayurvedic way.

Every person is complex and has a very unique order of elements and, most likely, some imbalance in their body/mind/spirit.

Why should I work with an Ayurvedic practitioner?

A practitioner is someone with more specialized knowledge about how these elements work. They are someone who can look at all the aspects of your life, diet, routine and history to determine your dosha, imbalance and a plan to bring you back into balance for each season.  Just like learning a new thing it takes time, patience and practice refocus and see your life through this lense. Luckily it is an innate ability for our bodies to heal themselves; all we really need is a reminder and dedicated listening to the knowledge our body stores.
